He said that the X (formerly Twitter) ban in the past year has proven ineffective and, therefore, it should now be lifted.
X (formerly Twitter) has been blocked in the country for a year. However, users continued to access the social media platform via VPN.
According to a report, the number of X users in the country is around 4.5 million.
In February 2024, around ten days after the general elections held on February 8, the Pakistani government imposed a ban on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). This measure was taken during the mandate of the goalkeeper’s government.
The X social media platform was blocked in Pakistan due to national security problems, and not to limit freedom of expression, said Minister of Information Attaullah Tarar later.
In March, the Ministry of the Interior informed the High Court of the Sindh (SHC) that the platform had been officially blocked in February following intelligence reports. Access to X is limited in various regions of Pakistan since February 17.
Tarar said that the decision to ban X had been made before the general elections of February 8 due to “compliance problems”. He rejected the suggestions that the ban was unexpected.
Tarar also explained that separatists and terrorists, in particular the Balutchistan Liberation Army (Bla), used the platform to promote anti-state activities, especially live from terrorist acts. He stressed that such actions could not be authorized.
