Lahore:
The senior PML-N official and former federal minister Khawaja Saad Raique demanded the abolition of the prohibition of X (formerly Twitter), who has been in place for a year.
In a statement on the platform on Saturday, Rafale said that despite the ban, users continue to access the platform via VPNs, making the restriction ineffective.
“The prohibition of X has not been useful in the past year. Everyone still uses it via VPN, so it should now be lifted,” he said.
It should be noted that the platform was blocked in Pakistan shortly after the general elections of last year. However, users continued to get around the restrictions using VPN services.
According to reports, X has around 4.5 million users in the country, many of whom remain active despite the official ban.
Meanwhile, the government has not indicated any reversal of its decision with reports indicating that the officials suggested that the return of the platform was not on the cards anytime soon.
Ironically, while the public remains locked up, government services continue to use X for official announcements, probably through VPN.
The platform, with around 4.5 million users in Pakistan, was blocked in February 2024, shortly after the general elections, during the goal of the goalkeeper’s government.
The last nail in the coffin was a press conference by the former commissioner of Rawalpindi, Liaquat Chattha, who accused the chief elections commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja and a former chief of the electoral engineering fraud.
One year, the prohibition remains firmly in place, without any indication of a change of policy while users continue to complain about the lack of access to the popular social media platform.
