PTA begins the license process for VPN service providers

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) launched the license for VPN service providers in the “class license” category, marking an important step in regulating data services in the country.

On Monday, the PTA approved the requests of two companies for the granting of class license to provide VPN services, confirmed an official press release.

“This initiative allows companies to use VPNs for legal purposes, guaranteeing data security, confidentiality and regulatory compliance while promoting transparency,” the PTA said in the press release.

The PTA has reiterated its commitment to helping companies meet their connectivity needs in a responsible manner and has urged more VPN service providers to request licenses.

In November 2023, telecommunications Authority introduced a rationalized process for the recording of private internet bridges after unregistered VPNs were blocked in Pakistan. The regulatory decision was to improve Internet security and protect users from potential threats.

VPNs are widely used worldwide to access the limited content, Pakistan is no exception. Citizens have relied on VPNs to access the X platform (formerly Twitter), which has been prohibited in the country since February 2024 due to “national security problems”.

The growing censorship has led to increased use of VPNs, with problems such as the difficulties in sending multimedia files via persistent WhatsApp for certain users.

In response, the PTA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Computer Science and Telecommunications (Moit & T), Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) and Pakistan IT Association (P @ SHA), designed a recording mechanism aimed at providing a secure environment for IT and electronic commerce sectors.

“The simplified framework supports uninterrupted access to computer companies, freelancers and other stakeholders, strengthening PTA’s commitment to the extension of the digital economy of Pakistan,” concluded the press release.
