Canadian men’s football coach Jesse Marsch castigated President Donald Trump for his “51st state” remarks, calling them “insulting”.
Marsch, from Wisconsin who played for the American team in the early 2000s, was appointed male football coach of the Canada team in 2024.
During the media day of the Concacaf League of Nations on Wednesday, Marsch did not hold his opinion on Trump’s comments, saying that he was “ashamed” in the way Canada was mentioned by the president.

“As an American, I would like to approach the speech of” 51st state “, which I find disturbing and, frankly, insulting,” Marsch told journalists. “Canada is a strong and independent nation that is deep in decency. It is a place that values ethics and high respect unlike the polarized, disrespectful and now often hated climate in the United States
“Canada appreciates a lot of equity and unity. It is a place that I learned, as the coach of the national team, where people really believe that their differences make them stronger and, honestly, it is one of the things that I appreciated the most in our team.
“They illustrate this as human and team beings. They are almost all of Canadians of first and second generation, coming from different heritage and cultures. But they are incredibly proud to be Canadian, to represent their country, to give everything and the love they have for the other and play for their country.”
There have been tensions between the United States and Canada for weeks after Trump qualified Canada on the 51st state and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “governor”.

Trump also recently announced prices against Canada, Mexico and China. Trump agreed on February 3 to suspend prices for 30 days, which means that they should be imposed in early March. Trump’s prices imposed in Canada are in response to drug trafficking at the United States Canadian border.
At the end of last week, Trump and Trudeau spoke of various problems, and the White House published a statement saying that the two leaders discussed the hockey tournament in confrontation of the 4 nations, which only added to tension that the Canadians hoked the US national anthem.

Team Canada beat the United States team in overtime to win the inaugural hockey tournament in Boston. Before the washer was abandoned in this championship match, the singer of the Canadian anthem changed the words to protest against Trump.
Marsch ended his statement with a message for Trump.
“If I have a message to our president, he is dismissed from ridiculous rhetoric about Canada being the 51st state,” said Marsch. “As an American, I am ashamed of the arrogance and contempt that we have shown one of our oldest, strongest and most faithful allies.

“The desire that we have to go after this tournament in all ways and show on and off the field exactly what the Canadian character is.”
Canada will face Mexico on March 20 in the Concacaf Nations League semi-finals, while the American team will face Panama the same day.
