Do you remember the one laptop project by child (OLPC)? The super ambitious initiative, launched in 2005, sought to provide low -cost and sustainable laptops to young students in developing countries at a time when about a billion children had little access to education and without access to computers.
OLPC introduced the XO-1 laptop in 2007, with a unique energy efficient design, a screen readable by sunlight and mesh networking capacities. The goal was to sell it for $ 100 per unit – although the costs ultimately exceeded expectations. There were also logistical challenges, such as limited access to the Internet and a lack of teacher training.
Now Framework, the company behind a range of modular laptops, has introduced the laptop Framework 12, a durable 12.2 -inch, durable 12.2 -inch convertible, which reminds me of this project. It is surely not a coincidence that the founder and CEO of Framework, Nirav Patel, worked on OLPC, creating open source and computer vision libraries for OS sugar on XO laptops.

Patel says that the new laptop of frame 12 is: “The purest manifestation of our vision and our philosophy of the product in the framework, and in many ways the product I launched the company to create.”
Available in five colors, each with an optional color stylus, it has a TPU absorbing overmarded shocks on rigid PC / ABS plastic, with an interior metal structure for sustainability. And because it comes from framework, if you break it, it will be easy to repair.
It may be small, but it’s also powerful. As Patel explains: “Instead of using a processor with a typical small nucleus, we brought the complete intel processor in the i3 and i5 variants. We have activated the support up to 48 GB of RAM DDR5-5200, 2 TB of NVME and Wi-Fi 6th storage, which are all modular and upgrades. »The 1920 × 1200 display offers> 400 brightness nits with touch -up and stylus.
“Even if we had students in mind when we started to develop this product two years ago, we found that we iterated through prototypes that each adult who tried it too!” Said Patel.
There is not yet a word on prices (it will certainly not be $ 100), but we should know more soon, because it should be available in pre-order in April, with shipments in mid-2025. As always, you can choose between Windows or Linux.
