‘March Against Mills’: the governor of Maine’s female athletes during the transgender controversy

A demonstration against the governor of Maine Janet Mills, walking against Mills, took place outside the Maine State House on Saturday morning.

Mills recently clashed with President Donald Trump on his decree to keep transgender athletes outside female sports and girls.

Several female athletes took the microphone during the march to denounce their democratic governor.

Julia Dietrich, Junior of Midcoast High School, made the headlines earlier this week with a passionate speech at a meeting of the School Board and echoed the feelings similar to a crowd full of supporters.

Speaking in front of signs that said “saving female sports”, Dietrich explained that even if she does not compete in secondary athletics, she is a journalist for the school newspaper and saw the negative effects of organic men in competition against opposite sex.

“We have waited. We talked about it. We trusted people in power they would protect the integrity of female sports. But our patience only encountered inaction, dismissal and policies that continue to erode the opportunities and equity that female athletes deserve,” said Dietrich.

“It is not only a team, a game or a season. It is the future of female sports. It is every young girl from the Maine State who laces her crampons or her marches on the track with a dream of competing on a fair and fair playground. These are generations of women in front of us who fought for the right to participate in athletics and generations after us and the same experience and respect for us.

“If fighting for equity makes us controversial, too bad. Reality is fighting for equity in sport is not only a preference, it is a necessity.

Dietrich then called on competitors to “refuse to compete” in the games.

“Let the silence of dashboards and the immobility of the fields send a stronger message than words could never.

Isabelle Hope, former Softball Champion in high school state and softball player in division I, admitted that she “could lose friends” by expressing herself against transgender athletes in female sports “, but maybe I will win some”.

Hope added that fight is not a political problem.

“I am not here for a political reason. I am here today because our girls should not have to fight for a good luck. This chance should already be there and be protected,” continued Hope. “If someone really has the impression of being in bad skin, I fully believe that he has the right to transition.

“We are a free country. However, I do not think that women should sacrifice their spaces for equality because there will always be a difference in sport.”

Before walking, an online petition to recall that the governor received more than 22,000 signatures. Hundreds appeared at the rally.

Last week, Trump told Mills to the White House that she had to follow her decree or “you will not get any federal funding”.

“We will see you in court,” she replied.

“I comply with state and federal laws,” added Mills.

“Well, we are the federal law,” replied Trump. “You better do it. You better do it because you will have no federal funding at all if you don’t.”

This “embarrassed us,” said Maine’s state representative Katrina Smith during the rally on Saturday.

“When people behind us fight for girls, she chose not to fight for them.”

Trump then ordered investigations into title IX on Maine, California and Minnesota.
