It seems that we were going to get a brand new iPhone model this year in the form of the iPhone 17 air – which apparently replaces the iPhone 16 Plus – and some fresh leaks give us a better idea of what to expect.
First of all, in his article on Apple’s plans for a foldable iPhone, the highly respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentions that the folding iPhone “will use the same high density battery cells as the iPhone 17 ultra-thin”.
The suggestion is that the air of the iPhone 17 and the foldable iPhone will use modified battery technology which contains more capacity in a smaller space – very practical when you talk about super -3 combinations (including one of the folds).
This should appease certain concerns about the air of the iPhone 17 having a relatively short battery life, due to its slimming. The new C1 Apple C1 chip which made its debut in the iPhone 16th should also improve internal efficiency and help the battery life on the iPhone 17 series.
The size counts

So, how thinly the iPhone 17 air? The regular Tipster @universeice suggests that it will only be 5.5 mm (0.22 inch) from front to back, which perfectly corresponds to what we have already heard other sources.
The same prediction also suggests the dimensions of the iPhone 17 air, which are apparently also the same as the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max: a height of 163 mm (6.42 inch) and a width of 77.6 mm (3.06 inches).
However, the iPhone 17 Pro Max would have an 8.725 mm (0.34 inch) thickness, compared to the 8.3 mm (0.33 inch) of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This increased thickness could be dropped to improve cameras and a significant overhaul.
Thus, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is likely to become thicker, while the iPhone 17 air stops thinner – something for everyone, whatever the size of your hands or your pockets. If Apple sticks to its usual annual schedule, these phones will appear in September 2025.
