- Iplayer is finally available in the Play Store of Streamer Google TV
- BBC streaming channels are also available in Guide
- The delay was due to a “technical problem” which seems to have been solved
As much as we like the Google TV streamer, there was a huge problem if you are a British spectator: there was no Iplayer application. So, for almost six months now, British users are missing one of the most important streaming applications. This has finally changed, and the Iplayer application is now supported, and the BBC channels in streaming are also added to the “channels” view, according to 9TO5GOOGLE.
Iplayer is not exactly an obscure application: it has been at the forefront of British streaming since its beginnings in 2007, and today is one of the applications you expect from each British streamer and smart TV. This includes Google TV and Android TV, where it has been available for years. His arrival on Google TV Streamer has been expected for a long time.
Why was Iplayer not available for the Google TV streamer?
There is a little background here. The BBC has a list of officially supported devices which “meet our standards and have passed our tests”. The Google TV Streamer was not one of them at the launch – the same goes for Chromecast – but in November 2024, the device was added to the official list. And then the device was removed again, the BBC saying that “there is a technical problem on which we work with Google”.
Whatever the problem, it has apparently been corrected (although the BBC has not yet updated its certification list to say it) and the Iplayer application is now available to install, and the channels appearing for easy live streaming.
It has taken a long time, but it is good to see that Iplayer finally arrives: for those of us in the United Kingdom, it is one of the most important streaming applications of all, especially because everything is free for costs of costs.
You can install the application now from the Applications section of your streamer or via the Google Play Store on your phone.
