- The Mac Mute button now corresponds to the graphics on the screen
- Keyboards for macbooks and iPads have been updated
- It is the first adjustment of the button design since in 1999
Apple has unveiled new brilliant macbook for 2025 earlier this week – and in addition to presenting the latest M4 chipsets inside, they also correct the keyboard surveillance that has existed since the last century.
As spotted by iCulture (via macrumors), the mute button on the keyboard now shows a small speaker with a withdrawal line through it. Previously, the icon was just a speaker, with none of the sound waves next to it that the other volume buttons display.
Why is it important? Well, as you will notice if you read this on a Mac, if you press the Mute button on an Apple keyboard, you get a speaker icon with a withdrawal line through it on the screen. The keyboard graphics now correspond to macOS visuals.
It is not really a change in the large scheme for upgrading, but it is pleasant to have a certain consistency. The old silent button icon has existed since the launch of the PowerBook G3 in 1999.
Look good
Apple did not officially say anything officially on the updated iconography, but the change has also been made on the new magic keyboard which is delivered with the 7th generation iPad Air tablet, supplied by the M3 chipset.
This would indicate that the new look is there to stay and will continue to appear on Mac keyboards in the future. The next computers we expect from Apple are the M5 MacBook Pros, due before the end of the year.
Judging by the comments on the Macrumors article linked above, it is not something that was particularly confusing or frustrating for users – but given the usual attention of Apple to details, it is strange that the inconsistency has persisted.
Our full examination of the M4 MacBook Air is still in progress, but we have managed to get time on the updated laptops – and the fresh sky blue color is certainly the one that attracts attention.
