- The FCC creates a Security Council
- This will focus on cyber lodges and defense
- A holistic approach to cybersecurity arrives at the United States government
The new president of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, announced that he will establish a security council to protect himself from cyber attacks, with a specific accent on “a persistent and constant threat against foreign opponents, in particular the Chinese Communist Party”, Financial time Reports.
“These bad actors always explore means of violation of our networks, devices and technological ecosystem. It is more important than ever that the FCC remains vigilant and protects the Americans and American companies from these threats, “said Carr.
Chinese threat players have targeted American infrastructure, including the US Treasury, forcing the agency to declare a “major incident”. These attacks seek to disrupt an already turbulent political climate in the United States and to weaken critical services.
Strategic competition
The Council will have a certain number of objectives, in particular by ensuring that the United States “won strategic competition with China on critical technologies” such as AI, satellites, 5G and quantum computer science-as well as the attenuation of American vulnerabilities to the actors of the national threat and to cyb-spying, and to reduce the dependence of the foreign supply chain.
Bringing the communications regulator to the FCC is part of the American government’s efforts to draw the resources from a range of different agencies in order to combat the growing threat of cyber adversaries.
The Chinese hacking group Salt Typhoon would be part of the attention of the council, and as a sad group behind the hacking of the treasury, as well as to target universities and telecommunications networks (and more), this will not be a surprise.
This is juxtaposed by the recent news that the United States seeks to suspend cyber-offensive operations against Russia-despite the confirmation of the CISA that the defense against all cyber-men, “including Russia” will continue as normal.
