Michigan Dems obtains backlash after the last trans sports vote in the state

The House of Representatives of Michigan voted on a resolution to urge Michigan High School Athletic Association to follow the executive order of President Donald Trump and prohibit transgender athletes from participating in the sports of girls and women.

“Allowing biological men to compete in female sports in defiance of a federal decree could put female athletes in Michigan in danger of injury, threatens the security and equity of competitions and undermines the intention of title IX”, indicates the resolution, via the Detroit Free Press.

Sixty-six people voted in favor of the resolution, against 43 no; Eight of the Yays were Democrats, who were criticized by LGBTQ +defenders.

“The change in the way Democrats are positioning themselves on transferable rights are disturbing,” said Equality Michigan Executive Director Erin Knott on Thursday. “It is time to act decisively to take a firm position and specify that we will fight to protect the LGBTQ + community whatever happens, and unfortunately, we do not see the same vigor as we even made last year.”

“We all want sport to be fair and athlete students to be safe,” added Knott. “This is why the MHSAA already has rules on which can participate in different sports at different levels through a range of problems. They already have a process in place and are experts with regard to sports in schools. They do not need politicians in Lansing to go beyond their expertise with a unique general ban.”

Jerron Totten, who directs the Party LGBT & Allies Caucus, “there are so many other problems that are more urgent, more worrying, more alarming than trans children who play sports. And I think we, as electors, are looking for legislators who will approach these problems and not marginalized communities.”

“The Democratic Party has chosen a different way of what we normally think they would,” said Jeffrey Pienela, president of Muskegon Pride, an organization of LGBTQ +advocacy.

“It’s surprising. It’s almost like, who has a back when none of the parts is doing?”

A democrat, representative Emily Dievendorf, explained why she voted for the resolution.

“I want you to think about what it means to be a child. Determine who you are trying to find a place to belong. Learning confidence by supporting your peers and mentors … Imagine now, you are informed by adults, by your own government that you are the problem.

“I know what it is to be a queer child, and it is alone. I know what it is to be our non -binary legislator, and it is insulating and dehumanizing. This resolution is not a question of equity. It is not a question of protecting the sports of women. It is not a question of security, because there is no threat. There is no threat.”

However, representative Alabas Farhat, a democrat who went against the majority of his party during the vote, offered an alternative.

“We want to make sure that there is a fair environment … To compete. And I’m just going to be honest, that’s where it comes for me. The people of my district, certainly, I think, agree with this feeling …” The representative Alabas Farhat said. “I would prefer that we prioritize conversations around affordability, around housing. I would prefer that these conversations are at the forefront instead of resolutions like this. But you know, once again, for me, it is a problem of equity and my district has very strong opinions on this kind of thing.”

The Ministry of Education has launched investigations into the title IX against three states – California, Minnesota and Maine – for not having joined order. The USDA arrested federal funding from Maine as a result, which Trump threatened.
