Afforestation necessary to save mangroves forests

Karachi:

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has recovered a wide strip of squatters’ mangroves forests, starting afforestation efforts to save the coastal ecosystem.

Over time, the empilers have started to reduce mangroves forests (known locally as Timaire forests) for the construction of residential units, which affected forest growth.

A KPT spokesperson said that mangroves forests are crucial for the marine environment. Consequently, on the agenda of the Prime Minister’s working group, the organization recently eliminated illegal encroachments from these occupied lands and recovering them, planting Timar in a large area around May Kolachi Road.

The KPT also expressed its determination that many of these trees are planted during the planting season. However, the responsibility of protecting mangroves forests and preventing their Cup remains a responsibility for the Sindh forest department.

Until 1980, dense mangroves of eight species existed along the Karachi coast. However, over the past four decades, federal and provincial institutions have enabled two to three kilometers of coastal land for the construction of expensive residential and commercial programs. This despite the fact that mangroves are protected forests under national and international laws and cannot be shot.

According to the details obtained by L’Express PK Press Club, the 75 -kilometer coastline of Karachi is parallel to several fishing and residential areas, including Ibrahim Hydari, Rehri, Chashma Goth, Lath Basti, Machhar Coliny, Hijrat Colony, May Kolachi, Korangi Creek, Hawkes Bay, Sandspit, Maika Pir, Shams Pir, Shams Pir, Shams Pir, Shams Pir, Shams Pir, Keamari, Manora, Baba Bhit Island, Sultanabad, Clifton and Defense.

Dr. Syed Nawaz al-Huda, a regional planner, revealed that the Tamarish forests, which were killed by zones near the Korangi Creek industrial park and the macchar colony, had a role to play in reducing atmospheric pollution of the city and controlling its temperature.
