Hyderabad:
The water crisis in the second largest urban center in Sindh has become alarming, upsetting people’s daily life in several neighborhoods, in particular Heerabad, Shahi Bazaar, Khai Road, Afandi Town, Tando Mir Mahmood, Unit No 12, and Kohsar.
Some areas are without regular water supply up to four days, forcing residents to use costly alternatives or dangerous sources.
In many affected areas, residents must buy water from private suppliers, often at exorbitant prices. In some cases, people count on water extracted from underground drilling, which raises serious health problems.
The water provided in pipelines is frequently contaminated, with muddy and foul -smelling water relationships, which makes it dangerous for human consumption.
The residents of Shahi Bazaar reported that the water provided to them is so dirty that it is unusable, while similar complaints have emerged from Sherish Nagar to Qasimabad. Ashiq, a local resident, said that after a four -day wait, the water that their area received was filled with debris and mud.
The crisis is particularly severe in the areas that extend from Khuda Hafiz Chowk to Kohsar, where the water supply was almost entirely cut. For months, Khuda Hafiz Chowk residents depend on the WASA pumping station (Water and Sanitation Agency).
However, the agency recently prohibited residents from collecting water from the station, and the regional filtration plant has stopped operating due to the insufficient availability of water.
Local residents have expressed concerns about corruption within the system. The allegations swirl according to which some managers of the wasa, citing unpaid wages, facilitate illegal water ties.
The reports indicate that illegal connections are being installed by spending pipes in the main line, putting additional pressure on an already overloaded system.
Meanwhile, Kohsar residents had no choice but to buy water from expensive oil services.
To protest against the current water shortages, residents of Kohsar and unit No. 12 organized a demonstration in Khuda Hafiz Chowk.
They call for the immediate restoration of the water supply and at the end of the illegal connections that aggravate the crisis. The demonstration, scheduled for Friday, collected the support of residents of other affected areas, which require rapid and effective action by the authorities.
Wasa claims to attack illegal connections and failing. However, citizens allege that some officials are accomplices of illegal practices, providing links during the night.
