He shared a little regret of the shooting before a judge brought the trouble.
“I agree to accept the sentence,” he said. “To go ahead, I will try to give an excellent example for everyone. Of all this, I wish safe feelings for my family and the community.”
The former champion did not argue any competition for criminal assaults and accusations of firearms as part of a negotiated agreement with the office of the County Prosecutor of Santa Clara, said district prosecutor Jeff Rosen in August. The accusations of premeditated murder against Velasquez were abandoned as part of the agreement.

Velasquez was arrested in February 2022 for attempted murder and multiple accusations of firearms after the police said that he had shot a pick-up bearing the man he claimed to have sexually assaulted his 4-year-old son. The man was then identified as Harry Goularte.
The prosecutors said Velasquez had continued a van carrying man in the animated streets in the San Jose region. Authorities said the prosecution extended to around 11 miles.
The former mixed martial artist injured the man’s stepfather in the incident, officials said.
Velasquez won his first UFC heavyweight championship in 2012 by beating the junior dos Santos. Velasquez successfully defended its title twice.
