- Samsung adds 9 -inch screens to its refrigerators side by side and four doors
- Refrigerators can identify ingredients about to expire and suggest recipes
- Some also have double cooling by AI to maintain consistent temperatures
Samsung has launched a new range of intelligent refrigerators designed to help reduce food waste in two ways: by keeping it colder with a system that provides additional cooling if necessary, and an AI system that can identify foods that are about to expire and suggest recipes to use them.
The new fridges made their debut at CES 2025, and I was able to see one in action for the first time at the London Kx Showroom in Samsung earlier this week. The technology is impressive, and not only for the show – it’s also practical.
Other intelligent features include doors that can be opened with a wave of your hand or a voice command via an integrated smart bixby speaker (ideal when you have your hands full and need to put something large on a shelf).
A hub on your refrigerator
The new set of refrigerators has a new 9 -inch screen – much smaller than screens on most smart refrigerators. The display is positioned at the eye level, and although compact, it means that you do not need an additional screen bulky your kitchen. It makes sense; Appliances on the kitchen counter are a disaster recipe when flour and sauces are involved.
The small screen can do just about anything that one of the best intelligent screens can, including the execution of applications, reading music and videos, recipe display and the use of all intelligent home devices compatible with the Samsung SmartThings platform (take a look at our overview of the best Smart Home devices for certain options).
You will find the 9 -inch screen on certain four -door refrigerators and side by side, while others will have a 35 -inch updated family center screen.
Whatever the one you choose, you will get better identification of foods, which can monitor the items when you put them in the refrigerator and pull in a huge catalog of recipes to help you use what you already have. The system can even identify foods that are about to expire and suggest ways to use them.
At the KX Showroom demo, I could see how you can use Bixby to search for recipes by ingredients and cooking. For example, you can use voice commands to search for Chinese recipes using tomatoes, and the refrigerator will display instructions to follow.
Some of the Samsung models also have a hybrid system that adapts to the volley to increase cooling if necessary and use less power at other times. The compressor at the bottom of the refrigerator is completed by a peltier module (a thermoelectric heat pump) at the top, which starts whenever the additional cooling is necessary (as when you have had the door open for a certain time to load your weekly shopping).
Together, this should help your food last longer and facilitate the use of everything before it spoils – provided your budget can bear it. Prices start at £ 2 199 (around $ 2,800 / $ 4,500 in).
