Pakistan obtained a consensus in the Fifth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on a resolution to finance the new office of the special envoy on the fight against Islamophobia, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The resolution on revised budgetary estimates was adopted without a vote during the closing session of the first part of the 79th Unga.

The first secretary of Pakistan to the United Nations mission, Jibran Khan Durrani, pronounced the national declaration, expressing his gratitude to the Islamic Cooperation Organization (OIC), G77 and China and other international partners for their support.

He noted that the result reflected the success of collective diplomacy and inclusiveness. Pakistan played a main role as one of the main negotiators during the committee discussions.

The resolution guarantees that the office of the special envoy on the fight against Islamophobia will be operational from the 1st of next month.

The mandate of the envoy will include monitoring, declaration and advice on the increase in Islamophobic trends on a global scale and the support of wider UN efforts against religious intolerance.

The adoption marks an important step for the multilateral commitment of Pakistan, following its successful efforts to designate on March 15 as an international day to fight against Islamophobia.
