- Same full stabilized sensor of 24.5 Mp as Nikon ZF
- The latest Exeeped 7 processor offers a series of performance improvements
- More expensive than Z5 at launch, costing £ 1,599 only (TBC in the United States and TBC)
Nikon unveiled the successor of his camera without a full -range z5 mirror z5: the powerful – and more expensive – Z5 II.
It is probably time – the Z5 24MP was launched in 2020 and began to be a little dated, especially for photography and high -speed video.
Nikon pushed the boat with the Z5 II – The second generation model brings several improvements based on performance and inherits a tower of flagship characteristics, including superb autofocus skills.
These improvements reflect the way the Nikon Z50 II improved on the Z50 – it was a decent if not radical upgrade.
The friction, however, is that the Z5 II feels expensive for an entry -level model and is about to walk on the toes of Nikon mid -range models; So much so, in fact, that it could represent an upgrade of the Z6 II – the previous version of the Nikon mid -range model, since updated by the Z6 III.
The question is therefore: does the Z5 II come out of its way, or is it a perfectly balanced offer?
Too much camera?
In the five years that followed its launch, the Nikon Z5 regularly lowered the price and can be obtained for much less than $ 1,000 / 1,000. It looks like a reasonable price for beginners and enthusiasts given their first full camera.
The Z5 is surprisingly well designed for an entry-level model, which means that it is an excellent value for money for users focused on fixed images. However, in 2025, the specifications of the camera were somewhat modest, especially if you turn action and video. In steps the Z5 II.
At £ 1,599 only, or £ 1,859 with the target of 24 to 50 mm, the Z5 II, costs around 10% more than the Z5 when launched in 2020, but it is actually double the price of a Z5 now in 2025. In certain regions, the Z5 II is also available in a kit with the Lens 24-70mm 24-7m (£ 2,299). I will update this page with prices and Australia when I get it.
What do you get for money? A camera with the same resolution of 24.5 MP as the Z5, although in a refined sensor identical to that of the Nikon ZF, with the best image stabilization of Nikon, now evaluated up to 7.5EV.
There is also the latest Expeed 7 processor from Nikon, which offers much faster burst of burst: 14 continuous IPS and 30 IPS in a high-speed +frame capture mode, with up to a second of pre-caps when you half press the shutter button.
The phase follow -up autofocus system with 3D follow -up is also the best version of Nikon, as shown by Z8 and Z9 flagship models, with subject detection for up to nine types, including people, birds, dogs, cats, cars and planes.
Nikon says that the Z5 II autofocus can detect distant and small subjects that occupy as little as 3% of the framework, and it is the most sensitive focus to date, evaluated up to -10EV, which means that it is capable of acquiring a concentration in near darkness.
Video recording is also well improved compared to the Z5. We now get a 4K 30p video with Nikon’s N-Row and N-Log colors, plus 4K 60p video, although with an image culture. The N-Raw video can be recorded directly on a memory card, which is a first for Nikon-the Z5 II has SD UHS-II Twin SD locations.
It is not only the performances that have received a boost – the management of the Z5 II is also improved. His body sealed by the weather looks very much like Z6 III, including a 3.2-inch 2,1 m touch screen which is now the Vari-angle type, which means that it can be returned to the side of the camera and inverted for selfies. The 3.69 -meter EVF is also three times brighter, estimated at 3,000 nits in 1,000 Nits in the Z5.
And, as on the Z50 II, there is an image control button, with which users can select the color profile they like, including recipes that can be downloaded from Nikon’s imaging cloud and the personality created.
Overall, it is an important update without shaking the boat, even if the price requested pushes it a little. That said, we are not working on the cost point too much, because Nikon has history to reduce his cameras faster and heavily than rivals.
The fact that the Z5 II tackles the three upgrades Z6 III that I wanted as a user Z6 II is super -impressive – the Nikon Z5 series has just raised the bar for entry -level performance.
We are currently carrying out an in -depth examination of the Nikon Z5 II, and we will soon share our experiences.
