Pakistan is ready to welcome the very first world squash championship under 23s which starts from tomorrow (Sunday) from April 6 to 10 at the Dha Creek Club Squash Stadium.
32 countries will participate in what will be the first major squash event in Pakistan after decades. This is the first time that the world director organ has organized a world championship in this age group.
Since Squash was included at the 2028 summer Olympic Games, this world event will allow the best players to participate in the Olympic Games.
Pakistan has a glorious story in squash, with legends like Jahangir Khan, Hashim Khan and Jansher Khan, and more recently, Hamza Khan, who won the world junior squash championship in 2023.
Pakistan has organized a number of international tournaments and has many professional training centers across the country. Pakistan reached its peak in the 80s and 1990s under the reigns of Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan.
The two players won many laurels for the country. Jansher has won the world’s Open eight times and the British Open six times. He was ranked number 1 to the world for six years.
Jahangir Khan is easily the greatest professional squash player of all time with an unofficial record to have a sequence of 555 consecutive victories. Between 1950 and 1997, Pakistan raised more than 30 British open titles, 14 titles from the open world and many other titles.
Last week, the main minister of Sindh, Sharjeel Inam Memon, on behalf of the Sindh government, delivered a check for 30 million rupees to Adnan Asad, a Sindh Squash champion official, in support of the next world squash championship for the under 23.
Speaking at a press conference alongside the sports secretary, Abdul Aleem Lashari and Adnan Asad, Sharjeel reaffirmed the commitment of the Sindh government to promote sports and improve the global image of Pakistan through such initiatives.
