Washington capital star Alex Ovechkin scored the 894th goal of his career in a 5-3 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks to equalize the Gretzky record. The goal came in the first minutes of the third period on a capitals power game.

The teammates spilled on the ice to surround Ovechkin.

In the stands, patel and Gretzky celebrated.
“Congratulations to The Great One Wayne Gretzky and her immense accessories at # 8 @ OVI8,” said Patel in an article on X. He shared a photo inside the locker room that shakes the hand of Ovechkin. “The biggest match on Earth, honored to be with them during this record liaison evening … 894 goals #Legend @Nhl.”
Ovechkin is a goal to pass Gretzky – an opportunity he had on Friday evening, but refused to seize.

“He wants to break the record with a goalkeeper in the fold, which I appreciate,” said head coach Spencer Carbery. “He told me that on the bench, and I just wanted to confirm that he did not want to go out. And it’s difficult for us as trainers, because I just wanted to make sure at that moment: Trick, at home. And he didn’t want to go out and score on an empty net to break the record.”
He added: “We have six games left, and he wants to beat the record and have this moment when he pulls the washer in front of a goalkeeper.”

Ovechkin’s next opportunity will take place on Sunday against the New York Icelanders at UBS Arena.
