- The port of Seattle sent letters of notification to people affected in the August 2024 ransomware attack
- The letter was sent to around 90,000 people
- The attack was led by Rhysida Ransomware Group
Port of Seattle, the American government agency supervising the sea port and city airport, began to send letters of data violation to persons affected by the ransomware attack in August 2024, revealing that around 90,000 people were affected.
“The port of Seattle announced today that letters of notification had been posted to people whose data was assigned in the cyberattack of August 2024,” said the company on its website.
“This website notice is intended to provide the same information included in notification letters to people for whom the port has insufficient or obsolete contact details.”
Rhysida blamed
In the letter, the port of Seattle said that it had undergone a cyber attack on August 24, 2024. After analyzing the attack, he discovered that the attackers “consulted and downloaded personal information from port systems”, including the inherited systems used for employees, the entrepreneur and parking data.
“The port contains very little information on airport or maritime passengers, and systems processing payments have not been assigned,” he said.
The data taken, mainly belonging to the current and old port and to other employees and entrepreneurs, included complete names, birth dates, social security numbers (or last four figures), a driving license or other government identity card numbers and medical information.
The agency informed some 90,000 people from the incident, most of whom (around 71,000) come from Washington’s state.
The letter also confirms that the Ransomware Rhysida group was behind the attack. Even if the criminals asked for payment in exchange for the release of systems and the deletion of stolen data, the port decided not to pay.
“We refused to pay the ransom requested and, therefore, the actor can respond by displaying data they claim to have stolen on their Darkweb site,” said the port of Seattle at the time.
Rhysida is one of the largest ransomware operators, having assumed the responsibility of attacks against the British library, the Chilean army, the Insomniac Games and many others.
