The best hope of the NFL draft, Abdul Carter, was revealed to have a stress reaction in his right foot during tests at the NFL combination in February.
A stress reaction is an early sign of an lesion of bone stress and can be transformed into a constraint fracture if it is not treated correctly.
Carter, 21, had a medical chronicle in Indianapolis last week which showed that the reaction of stress is healing, and no surgery will be necessary, by ESPN.

“It should be a non-factor with the teams at this stage,” said Carter agent Drew Rosenhaus, via ESPN.
Dr. Erica Urquhart, a certified orthopedic surgeon of the Board of Directors, spoke to PK Press Club Digital fractures and what they mean for athletes. Urquhart said that, generally, stress fractures are caused by overuse.
“Overwardness is linked to a repetitive activity or activities that generate significant things, again using the word, stress in a localized area of the body could then cause a stress fracture,” said Urquhart.
Urquhart said that stress fractures and an “incomplete fracture” of the bone which are initially treated with rest.
“We will encourage rest, immobilization to allow the body to heal,” said Urquhart.
Immobilization could take the form of a mold or a splint.

“In general, we immobilize this area, and we create an artificially context where this area can be rested by the flow or by the bracing,” said Urquhart.
Urquhart said that generally the recovery time for rest is a question of weeks and is generally six to eight weeks. However, if a stress fracture is not completely healed, the athlete may require surgery.
“For the football player, stress fractures can certainly be reappeared and depending on how they have been treated. So, if we look at a situation where an athlete was diagnosed with a fracture, they were treated with rest and immobilization, then the radiographic science of this fracture fell or regressed, then being essentially said that we said that we are starting to start a base.” Urquhart.
“However, if he continues to be radiographic signs or even clinical signs of injury, then we did not come back to the basic line and if this athlete had to resume the activities that precipitated the injury at the start, then, of course, we could consider this as a drafting, but it is really a continuum to have a injury that has not been completely healed.”
The surgery recovery time is six to eight weeks, but Urquhart said that because the foot is a bone carrying the full weight, that six to eight weeks is not a final chronology. Surgery does not prevent an athlete from future bone injury.
“Surgical treatment is certainly a more final treatment and in a young healthy individual, would expect recovery to be full, but the requirements of athletics certainly make this discussion in athletes a little more complicated,” said Urquhart.

Carter was the best defensive player for Big Ten in 2024 with 68 plated, 23.5 plated for the loss and 12 bags last season for Penn State. During his career, Carter has 39.5 plated for the loss, 23 bags and 14 defended passes.
For any team selects the Penn State star, they hope that the stress reaction is fully healed and not something that turns into a recurring problem that would force him to miss the games in the fall.
The winner of the Carter and Heisman Trophy, Travis Hunter, is widely considered the first two prospects of the NFL 2025 draft and could slip as a starter and have an immediate impact on the first day.
