New MLB: The Rangers launcher almost fails to start with a suspected spider bite

The launcher starting from the Texas Rangers, Patrick Corbin, was not a guarantee to make his debut in the 3-1 victory of the team against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday.

Corbin, 35, entered the Rangers clubhouse on Wednesday with a swollen ankle, after being bitten by an insect on Monday.

“It was really bad in the morning,” said Corbin to journalists on Thursday afternoon. “I didn’t know if I was going to throw.”

“He could barely walk when he entered. I don’t know if it was a spider or what,” said Rangers manager Bruce Bochy. “A kind of venom has entered it. I don’t know if it was a spider or what. It was 50/50 to take it or not,” said Bochy via MLB.com.

Corbin received treatment before the match and made its start. He launched 5 1/3 rounds when he only abandoned one point on five strokes and withdrew six strikers and won the victory.

The Rangers signed Corbin at the end of spring training while they were dealing with injuries to their starting rotation. They signed the left launcher on March 18.

Corbin is in his 13th MLB season. He spent the first six seasons of his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks and twice the National League Stars team.

After six seasons with the Diamondbacks, Corbin spent the following six seasons with the Washington Nationals after signing a six -year contract with the team before 2019.

Corbin was an integral part of the team’s launcher staff during their playoff race in 2019, when the Nationals won the World Series during the Houston Astros.

The next Rangers match (12-7) is against the Los Angeles Dodgers (14-6) Friday at 8:05 p.m. on Friday.
