A historic moment took place in the sandy extent of the Cholistan desert today, because a rare observation of a Caracal cat was confirmed for the first time in its natural habitat.

The majestic wild feline was observed in hunting mode, with a herd of Cerf from Chinkara nearby – which makes the scene all the more remarkable.

The Caracal is listed among wild species in the end of Pakistan and is notoriously difficult to identify, especially in arid and semi-desert regions like Cholistan. Its presence means not only the ecological vitality of the region, but also underlines the impact of efforts to monitor and conservation of the wildlife in progress.

Mujahid Kaleem, wild assistant curator, Rahim Yar Khan, described observation as one of the most unforgettable experiences of his career. “Such moments are a source of immense joy for all lovers of nature and official fauna,” he said.

According to the Wildlife Department, rare observation has been documented and will be used for future research and conservation strategies aimed at protecting vulnerable wild species in the country.
