Faisal Shafi and Danish Elahi, two Karachi runners, set a world record in the Boston marathon.
They finished the race of 26.2 miles in 3 hours and 26 minutes, becoming the first people to do so while wearing shalwar Kameez traditional.
Their accomplishment marks the first time that any runner ended a major marathon in less than four hours dressed in Pakistani national outfit.
The duo started and finished the race together and devoted their achievement to their country.
“This record is dedicated to all of Pakistan,” said Elahi after the race.
“Make a record in a historic race like Boston is really memorable.” Shafi echoed his feelings, saying: “We did it to highlight the positive image of Pakistan.”
Although no official category exists to run in traditional clothes, the feat of the duo was recognized by the world record Guinness as a world record.
Their performance mixed cultural pride with athletic endurance, attracting the admiration of other competitors.
The Boston marathon, organized for the first time in 1897, is one of the most prestigious long distance events in the world.
Upon their return to Pakistan, Shafi and Elahi plan to organize celebrations to share their milestones with supporters.
