Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has approved the construction of two new international airports in Sukkur and Muzaffarabad, with work on the two projects that should be completed in the five years.
The PAA trained a committee to supervise land acquisition for new sites, sources said. The preliminary work has already started under the supervision of the Department of Works and Development of the PAA.
Sources have said that the 2 billion RS rupees aimed to extend regional connectivity and strengthen the country’s aeronautical infrastructure. Technical consultants and external experts will be committed to support the design and construction phases.
Sukkur International Airport is expected to serve the upper Sindh region, while Muzaffarabad International Airport will improve air access to Azad Jammu and cashmere. The two airports are considered key investment in infrastructure by the federal government.
The announcement follows a recent order by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to conduct a feasibility study for an additional international airport in Mirpur. The study was caused by a letter from British members of the Parliament addressed to the Prime Minister.
