Quetta:
On Wednesday, two members of the surveys staff were martyred in the Balutchistan Mastung District when unidentified armed men attacked a security team keeping a polio vaccination campaign – the second type incident since the start of the national campaign this week.
The incident, considered an attempt to undermine Pakistan’s current efforts to eradicate polio, attracted a strong condemnation of the federal and provincial authorities.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the terrorist attack in the strongest terms and is committed to holding responsible officials.
“Terrorists who harm innocent civilians and security staff are enemies of humanity and will be punished,” he said.
He said such acts of violence would not shake the determination of Pakistan to destroy polio. “The government remains firm in its commitment to eliminate the disease. The polio campaign will continue with a complete national resolution,” he said.
The Prime Minister also called on parents, exhorting them not to lose heart and guarantee that their children receive vital polio drops to protect their future.
The chief minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti also expressed a deep sadness of the attack and described it as a coward act of terrorism.
