New MLB: ex-Orioles Chito Martinez Dead at 59 years old

Chito Martinez, the only MLB player to have never been from Belize, died, the Baltimore Orioles announced on Tuesday. He was 59 years old.

Martinez played three years in the Majors for Orioles as aerobatic from 1991 to 1993. He played in 158 career games, reaching 0.259 with 18 circuits, 58 products produced and 22 doubles.

“We mourn the death of the old voltiseur des Orioles Chito Martinez, the only one from Belize to play in the majors,” said the Orioles in a post on X.

Dalton Martinez, Chito’s son, wrote on X that his father died at Easter.

“Sunday evening at Easter, my father was removed from this land unexpectedly,” he wrote. “We desperately need help at that time. My father was one of the best men. Taught the baseball game in the right direction. I taught young men to be better. His presence in my life can never be replaced. While I take the pieces in my life, please help you help.

The cause of death was not made.

Chito Martinez was a sixth round choice in the 1984 draft by the Kansas City Royals of Brother Martin High School of New Orleans.

The Royals released him in 1990 and he signed with the Orioles a few days later. The Orioles released him after the 1993 season and then joined the Minnesota twins. But he never appeared with twins.
