The Sindh government has announced its intention to impose official price ceilings on brand products sold in supermarkets and Karachi superstores, Express News said on Friday.
The general management of the Offer and Price Office will collect data on production costs and beneficiary margins to define the price structure.
This will help establish fair prices for essential products on the market.
The decision was made following a meeting chaired by Zahid Hussain Shar, Managing Director of the Offer Office. High civil servants and representatives of major retail chains were present in Reunion.
Shar explained that Karachi’s retail companies will now have to record their warehouses with the Offer office and keep them informed.
He stressed the importance of the application of the consumer protection law to protect consumer rights.
The government now has the power to regulate the prices of brand articles produced or sold in Karachi. This pricing mechanism should be deployed next month.
Data on production costs and beneficiary margins will be collected first to ensure transparency and equity in the process.
The objective is to ensure that Karachi residents can access brand products at reasonable prices while addressing the current inflationary pressures.
