NBA News: ex-star of the Knicks Dick Barnett dead at 88

Dick Barnett, a basketball renowned temple and an All-Star that won the NBA championships with the New York Knicks, died, the team announced on Sunday.

He was 88 years old.

The native of Gary, Indiana, was the fifth choice of the 1959 draft of Tennessee A & I. He started his career with the Nationals of Syracuse, played three seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and finally played nine years with the Knicks from 1965 to 1974.

“Throughout his illustrious career, Dick Barnett embodied everything that meant being a New York biwick, on and off the field,” the Knicks said in a statement. “He left a positive impact on all those he met and this organization has an incredible chance to have it is an integral part of its history.

“His jersey will forever be hung on the Rafers of Madison Square Garden, and his play throughout his career will always be part of the memories of Knicks fans.”

Barnett was part of the Tennessee A & I dynasty which won three NAIA championships in 1957. The school is now known as Tennessee State.

He was part of the 1970 Knicks team who beat the Lakers in seven games to win the championship. He collected an average of 14.9 points and 3.6 assists this season. He played with Willis Reed, Walt Frazier and Dave Debusschere.
