- Nintendo no longer authorizes two Nintendo Switch systems to simultaneously play the same digital game while being connected to the Internet
- A new system update, which added virtual game cards, has deleted the possibility of doing so
- Users can always play a copy of an offline digital game via the online license option
Nintendo Switch’s new update would have prevented two systems from playing the same digital game online simultaneously.
Nintendo has just repelled a huge update of the switching system before the Switch 2 launch, which adds several new modifications, including a functionality which now refers to digital games and DLC as virtual game cards.
This function is now available on the console home screen and allows users to practice and practically eject their software as physical play cards.
However, players now report that the functionality prevents two users from playing the same digital game online at the same time, which was possible before via a flaw (via Eurogamer).
Before the update, Switch Games bought on the main console of a player could be played on another account signed on this device, and the original owner could also connect and play the same game on a secondary console.
This would essentially allow the owner of the game and another person to play online game simultaneously on different devices, but the addition of virtual game cards makes this impossible.
Players can always play a copy of a digital game while being offline via the online licenses option in the profile settings.
“If this option is activated, the digital software purchased will be playable while the console is connected to the Internet, even when the virtual game card of this software is not loaded on the console,” said the online license setting.
“However, when using an online license, only the user connected to the Nintendo account which was used to buy the software will be able to play it, it will not be playable for other console users.
“Your virtual gaming cards can be used to play software regardless of this parameter. Online licenses cannot be used on several consoles at the same time. The online license and the virtual game card for a software title cannot be used at the same time.”
The Nintendo Switch 2 will also offer virtual game cards for certain games. The console launched on June 5, 2025 for $ 449.99 / £ 395.99 or $ 499.99 / £ 429.99 for the Mario Kart World pack.
If you are looking to get your hands on the new console, British pre -orders and American pre -orders are now live.
