For the first time in almost three decades, someone other than Gregg Popovich will be the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs.
Friday, the NBA franchise announced the promotion of Mitch Johnson to the head coach.
The decision occurred shortly after it was confirmed that Popovich will give up his functions as a head coach and would go to the full-time president of the team’s full-time basketball operations.
Popovich has managed Spurs’ basketball operations since 1994, balancing its executive role and its role as coach for 29 years.

Johnson was also the coach of San Antonio in the NBA Summer League in 2022 and 2023. Johnson intervened for Popovich for 77 games during the 2024-25 season while the five-time NBA champion recovered from what the team described as a soft blow.
