- Buffalo Skeleton Hard Disk transforms file storage in life, in art moving
- Do you want to see your data read in real time? This disc visually delivers it
- Not just storage, it’s a show – only 50 units available
To mark its 50th anniversary, Buffalo introduced an external hard drive in a special edition nicknamed the hard drive of the skeleton (HD-SKL). This reader reinvents the company’s skeleton model of the company and offers a rare overview in a hard drive in action – something that even the best SSD options cannot provide.
Thanks to its transparent window, users can look at the magnetic head moved while it reads and writes data, improved by a companion Windows application called “Seekwizard”.
The software allows the reader to carry out demonstration research models – such as sequential and random researchers – transforming the hard drive into a visual display of mechanical data.
A special edition to bring back memories
Founded in 1975 by Makoto Maki, Buffalo celebrates its evolution of an audio -focused company to a major player in PC peripherals. Its original skeleton hard drive released in 1998 had a capacity of 4.3 GB and included transparent coverage.
The 2025 special edition is limited to only 50 units, and although the design agrees with nostalgia, HD-SKL has a high-end aluminum chassis, with precision and anodized in matt black, echoing the style of the 3533 Yarn Drive Buffalo launched at the end of the 1970s.
Inside, the HD-SKL offers 4 to storage and connects via USB 3.2 Gen 1, with rear compatibility to USB 2.0. It also supports the micro-B port.
The reader is preformed in exfat for large support for the operating system, although USB-C users must provide their own adapter.
Weighing approximately 1.5 kg and measuring 126 × 185 × 115 mm, it is larger than the elegant portable SSD today – but its appeal is clearly different.
The product should be sent in June 2025 to 100,000 yen (around $ 688) after a sale based on the lottery ending on May 25.
