The proposed update policy ensures that the women’s category “will be open exclusively to female athletes”. The male category “will be open to all other athletes who are otherwise eligible for competition”.
The change would come into force through the levels of competition sanctioned, in particular division I, IA, II, III, Junior, Cadet, Youth, Veteran and all the other categories.
“If it is adopted, this policy only aims to guarantee the future compliance required by surveillance organizations. This policy does not reflect any change in our solid support for the right of each individual to identity,” said the announcement.
“We recognize that many people – in particular transgender and non -binary athletes and their supporters in the country’s fencing clubs – will be deeply affected if this policy takes effect.”
