In a rare demonstration of goodwill, Pakistan handed over a border security force (BSF) to the Indian authorities, while the Indian part did the same on Wednesday by returning an official of Pakistan Rangers.
The BSF Constable, Purnam Kumar, was apprehended by the Pakistani forces on April 23, 2025, after having inadvertently crossed the Pakistani territory via the Ganda Singh Wala / Ferozepur sector.
On the Indian side of the border, Muhammadullah, a Punjab Rangers staff, had been placed in police custody by BSF officials in similar circumstances.
The exchange followed several flag meetings between the border forces of the two countries, leading to the successful repatriation of the two individuals earlier in the day.
In a statement published by the Indian border security force, it was confirmed that Purnam Kumar had been safely returned by the Pakistan rangers. Indian officials appreciated the gesture, describing it as a positive signal in the middle of current tensions.
This development comes at a time when diplomatic relations between Pakistan and India remain tense. The two nations kept their borders sealed after limited skirmishes, and the commitments between the two parties were minimal.
The mutual repatriation of the border staff is considered a rare but constructive movement in the current geopolitical context.
