- We can finally know more about the SOC in the Nintendo Switch 2
- It offers a significant upgrade of the CPU and the GPU
- The protruding facts include a much higher clock speed and DLSS support
Although Nintendo has kept concrete details under Wraps, we finally have a better idea of the new system on chip (SOC) which feeds the Switch 2 Nintendo.
It is according to a detailed report by Digital Foundry, which digs in the exact specifications of the coming console and which seems to line up with many previous leaks.
The SOC would be largely personalized, unlike the Nvidia Tegra X1 more in stock than one finds in the original Nintendo switch.
Digital Foundry claims that it has a Cortex A78C processor with eight A78C cores, with a clock speed of 998 MHz while being moored or 1101 MHz in portable mode. It is also capable of a maximum clock speed of 1.7 GHz, although it is not clear if it would be reached in use.
The fact that the CPU apparently works at a higher clock speed in portable mode is also quite unusual. Traditionally, processor performance is strangled in mobile systems when driving the battery supply, in order to reduce energy consumption.
Digital Foundry speculates that it can be designed to compensate for the memory bandwidth, which goes from a 102 GB / s anchored to only 68 GB / S in portable mode.
Two of the CPU hearts would be reserved for system features, with six available for developers.
The GPU then includes the NVIDIA Ampère microarchitecture, which is also used in RTX 30 cards. The microarchitecture was four years today, so slightly older than the 2014 Nvidia Maxwell architecture used in the Tegra X1 was when the original switch released in 2017.
The GPU offers 1,546 strokes, a massive increase in the 256 of Tegra X1. Its clock speed is also increased, at 1,007 MHz anchored or 516 MHz in portable mode, with a maximum speed of 1.4 GHz.
Add the confirmed Nvidia DLSS support, and this SOC should be able to provide a significant increase in graphic power.
In terms of RAM, the console has 12 GB of LDPPDR5X memory in the form of two 6 GB modules. 3 GB is reserved for the system, while 9 GB is available for developers.
Digital Foundry also indicates that there is no support for VRR on HDMI, which is a little bizarre since it is supported by the integrated 7.9 inch, 120 Hz and 1080p screen of the system.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to Launch Globillaly on June 5, 2025. UK Pre-Orders and Us Pre-Orders Are Now Live, With the Console Coming In At $ 449.99 / £ 395.99 OR $ 499.99 / £ 429.99 for a bundle that Mario Kart World.
