The ranking of the PGA 2025 championship is a shoemaker for some, but the challenge of Quail Hollow Club could be perfectly summarized by a hole that the three best golfers in the world all fought during the opening round on Thursday.
Scottie Scheffler, Rory Mcilory and Xander Schauffele are classified one to three in the official classification of the world golf course, respectively, and they all finished with a double bogey on the 16th hole par-4, 535 yards in their opening tower.
Their problem with the hole was full as a star group for the start of the tournament, and McILroy pulled his starting to the left, which is an area to avoid due to the water. The rough caught his ball, but an annoying lie did not allow him to raise the ball at more than 20 meters in the fairway.

From there, the approach of McILroy missed the green on the right, and the left back spindle did not facilitate it near the part with a Bogey. He had a 12 -foot putt to leave with a five, but he missed and duplicated instead.
Scheffler and Schauffele had the tee more likely, but they both had trouble finding green in regulation. With water around him, they both found the bottom with their approach photos that went too far.

The two players fell into the penalty area to continue the hole and, once again, the location was treacherous for all golfers and made the closure difficult. Scheffler had 52 feet to make Bogey boxes, but he hit a seven feet to make a double. Then, Schauffele two blows of about 34 feet.
Scheffler behaved better than McILroy and Schauffele, ending his opening lap on equal to the 19th to 2 sous. Schauffele entered the clubhouse at 1 after 18 holes, while McILroy, winner of the Masters in April, was 3 after shooting a 74.

After its round, Scheffler told journalists that the dreaded “mud ball” was the cause of its 16th hole incident.
“This is one of those offers where it is frustrating to hit the ball in the middle of the fairway and make mud on it and not know where it will go,” he told journalists. “I understand that it’s part of the game, but there is nothing more frustrating for a player.
“You spend your whole life trying to learn to control a golf ball, and due to a rules of rules, all of a sudden, you have absolutely no control where this golf ball goes. But I do not do the rules. I just have to face the consequences of these rules.”
The three were not the only best golfers who find it difficult to understand Quail Hollow Thursday. Bryson Dechambeau (1-Over), Max Homa (2-Over), Jordan Spieth (3-Over) and Brooks Koepka (4-Over) were all struggling to find a groove. Phil Mickelson even carded an 8 against 79, which will be practically impossible to descend before the cup on Friday.

Not everyone had the same experience. The American Ryan Gerard directed most of the day after having drawn 5-mine of 66 years. Australian Cam Davis equaled it, entering the clubhouse with the same score, although he could have led 6 sous if not for a bogey on the final hole.
