A heat wave in progress at Punjab has forced the provincial government to reduce school hours and announce the holidays at the start of the summer from May 28.

School hours until the start of the holidays will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

According to a notification, the Punjab School Education Department announced Tuesday that educational institutions are closed for the summer holidays from May 28 instead of June 1 as announced previously.

Province’s schools will reopen after the holidays on August 15.

The Higher Education Department of Punjab also announced that summer holidays in colleges and universities would begin on May 28.

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Meteorological Department said that the dominant heat wave was to continue during the current week. The maximum temperature in Lahore on Tuesday was recorded at 42 degrees Celsius.

The spokesman said that high pressure should persist in the higher atmosphere during the current week. Under the influence of this weather condition, the temperatures of the day were to remain four to 6 ° C above normal in southern Punjab until May 24.

Central and higher punjab day temperatures should remain up to 7 ° C above normal during the period. Dust storms and burst winds are expected in isolated places in plain areas due to excessive heat during the period.

Due to the heat wave, residents, especially children, women and the elderly, it was advisable to take precautionary measures, avoid direct exposure to the sun during the day and remain hydrated.

Farmers were invited to manage their harvesting activities while keeping the weather conditions in view and also taking care of their cattle.

The provincial disaster management authority (PDMA) also published an alert concerning temperature elevation and heat waves.

Punjab rescue commissioner Nabeel Javed gave instructions to the provincial assistant commissioners to remain vigilant. He said the departments concerned, including district administrations, should be on alert for the heat wave.

The alert was also issued to the departments of school education, health, transport, local government and rescue 1122, sharing concerns about the elevation of temperature and heat waves in large cities and plains of Punjab until May 24.

There is an unusual increase in temperature in the coming days. Due to the heat wave, there is also chances of strong winds and thunderstorms in certain places in the plains.

The director general of the PDMA, Irfan Ali Kathia, said that an alert had been issued to the district administrations to ensure the supply of drinking water in public places.

The first aid supply for a heat stroke should be provided in hospitals and mobile health units, he said.
