- Fortnite returned to the App Store in the United States after an absence of 5 years
- IPhone and iPad users can now download the massively popular Battle Royal shooter
- The legal dispute between epic games and Apple is still in progress
Fortnite returned to the App Store in the United States after an absence of five years, bringing back one of the most popular games in the world on the iPhone and iPad.
Currently, users of the iPhone and iPad can go to iOS or iPados App Store and find the Battle Royale shooting platform and iPados’ virtual experience and download for free.
As mentioned, Fortnite is one of the most played games in the world. Its most popular mode is a third -person shooting game, which offers up to 100 players against each other on an island filled with unique locations and original weapons.
Fortnite was added for the first time to the App Store in 2018, but only two years later, Epic Games and Apple would begin a legal dispute which continues to date.
FortniteThe return to the iPhone and the iPad is an important step in said dispute, which revolves around commission apple costs on integrated applications and purchases.
In general, Epic accused Apple of having tried to form a monopoly via the App Store, while Apple sought to protect its right to invoice the commission on transactions in the application. Apple invoices a 30% commission on purchases made via the App Store, which extends to integrated purchases that use the Apple payment system.
The official Fortnite X account shared the news of the return of the game in an article which reads “Fortnite is back on the App Store in the United States on iPhones and iPad”.

According to ActivePlayer, Fortnite had been downloaded from the App Store 133 million times before being deleted – and with around 500 million downloads on all platforms, it is likely to rank among the most popular games of all time.
Many has changed since Fortnite Was available for the last time on the App Store – the game went from a royal battle only to a Roblox style platform for official experiences and generated by users, including links with LEGO and Rocket league.
Fortnite is available on the iPhone and iPad in the EU since August 2024, but it is because the EU digital market law requires telephone manufacturers to support third -party windows – including Epic Games Store.
And in other regions, such as Australia where Epic and Apple Games are engaged in a separate legal dispute for similar reasons, the game has not yet returned to the App Store.
A new chapter?
As we have already covered, Fortnite was initially withdrawn from the App Store following a dispute between the Epic and Apple games on how integrated purchases are managed.
Integrated purchases of Fortnite, composed of Subscriptions and emblematic virtual currency v-bucks, are the way free game earns money with users.
In 2020, Epic Games added its own payment system to the application to bypass commission apple costs on these integrated purchases – between 15% and 30% according to the Associated Press.
Apple replied by removing Fortnite from the App Store, and Epic Games suspended the support for the iOS and iPados versions of the game shortly after, and after new legal battles, alternative payment systems finally made it possible to operate at a 27%commission.
After a call from the Epic Games, Apple was ordered to stop collecting the Commission on alternative payment systems, and on May 19, the American district judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers asked Apple why he still blocked Fortnite without authorization from the court.
While Fortnite is now officially back on the App Store, the dispute between these technological titans is not yet finished – another hearing should take place on May 27. We will have the latest updates via our mobile game cover.
