- Video and browser applications are “soon” on Android Auto
- Applications will only be available when you are parked
- We should also now see more weather applications for the platform
The Google News continues to come: while we are entering the second day of Google I / O 2025, Google reported “new car application experiences” for Android Auto, which will include video players and browser for the first time.
According to the official blog, the support of videos and browsers “arrives soon” on Android Auto. However, as games on Android Auto, these applications will only work when your vehicle is parked to prevent them from distracting you on the road.
For video players, the deployment will be initially intended for Android 16 devices and “select compatible cars”, so it seems that it can depend a bit on the equipment you use and the dashboard you log into.
Google mentions being able to listen to the audio from videos while you drive, but this is always at the “Early Access” stage for the moment, and there is more work to do here for Google, car manufacturers and application developers.
Take the time with you
In the same blog article, Google says that the category of weather applications is now a graduate of Beta, which means that they do not need specific approval to operate on Android Auto – Find more weather applications that appear soon.
For cars with already integrated Google dashboards (which is not much, for the moment), the development is even further: the category of video applications is now open to submissions, while the browser category is currently in beta.
The blog post also mentions that the gemini assistant will arrive on Android Auto in the “months to come”, which we had already seen signs. Finally, he will resume all the vocal control tasks on the dashboard.
Being able to sit down and watch a video with passengers on Android Auto would be a very welcome upgrade. For me, navigation on the web on a car dashboard is less attractive, but it is good to see the platform improved and extended over time.
