Khanpur:
Wednesday, the water supply of the Khanpur dam irrigation was suspended due to a significant decrease in water entries.
According to sources of the dam, the current level of water fell to 1928.79 feet, well below the full storage capacity of the 1982 feet dam. The influx of water in the dam is located at only 26 brackets, while the flow was recorded at 148 CUSECs, creating an imbalance which required immediate conservation measures.
Officials have confirmed that the suspension of the supply of irrigation water, now in force in the last three days, complies with the legal and operational protocols established aimed at managing water resources during low influx periods. The reduced influx is attributed to the evolution of weather conditions and the lack of precipitation in the watershed areas.
Despite the disruption of irrigation supply, the authorities reassured residents that the supply of drinking water to Rawalpindi and Islamabad remains uninterrupted. Maintaining water supply to twin cities has been hierarchical to meet domestic consumption needs. The dam administration closely monitors the situation and should resume irrigation feeding once the entry conditions improved. Farmers relying on the dam for irrigation are invited to adopt water conservation practices and to explore alternative water sources during this temporary suspension.
The Khanpur dam, located on the Haro river near Khanpur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, plays an essential role in the supply of water for agricultural and domestic purposes in the region.
