- Google Cloud operates in 42 regions and 127 zones, supported by 33 submarine cables
- The American government trusts Google Cloud looks with top secret information
- Europe has a number of local tools and Germany is the next
In the midst of the American-Chinese current tensions on technological domination, Google has recognized that some countries are concerned about the technological domination of the United States, it has therefore announced some updates of its sovereign cloud services to ensure optimal confidentiality.
In a blog article, Google Cloud President of Customer Experience Hayete Gallot was boasted that the company now has more than 42 Cloud regions, 127 zones, 202 Network edge locations and 33 underwater cable investments supporting its global cloud services.
Once a niche and limited to highly regulated sectors such as defense and intelligence, sovereignty is now a general concern for many sectors and most governments, and Google has responded with a handful of updates.
Google improves its sovereign cloud portfolio for customers
The key to the ad is the Google Cloud air puncture cloud service, which works as an autonomous cloud without external network connectivity requirements. It is specially designed for sectors with strict residence and safety, and is based on open source components which, according to Google, can improve resilience and therefore the continuity of activities.
The company even obtained authorization to store data from the US Government Top Secret and secret level on Google Cloud Air Gappés in 2024 – A sign of its strong confidentiality identification information.
The second of the three key announcements of Google, Google Cloud Dediated, is a regional platform operated by partner which meets local sovereignty standards. The company has already teamed up with Thales in 2021 to make its very first confidence cloud by S3NS for Europe, but it is now confirmed that it will aim after Germany.
Finally, Google Cloud Data Boundary allows users to control more where their data is stored and processed, with improved protection via management of external keys and confidential calculation. For example, users of the workspace can select to restrict treatment in the United States or the EU, while choosing local data storage countries.
A tool supported by Mandiant called User Data Shield is added to this to guarantee the continuous verification of sovereignty postures.
Gallot has expressed a commitment to “empower organizations globally to navigate the complex landscape of digital sovereignty with confidence”, while noting how advanced security measures as a zero-frust posture, post-quantum cryptography and defenses fueled by AI are part of the wider strategy.
