Karachi:
Formerly nicknamed the largest slum in Asia, Orangi Town is no longer a Katchi Abadi, the CM advisor on the Najmi Alam colony said on the soil of the Sindh Assembly on Friday.
“The city of Orangi is no longer classified as a Katchi Abadi (slum), the Sindh government investing 7 billion rupees in its development,” said Najmi.
He noted that if the number of slums across the city has developed considerably, the government is committed to regularizing these regulations after completing all the necessary legal formalities.
He made these remarks on Friday during the question-answer session linked to the Department of the Human Colonies of the Sindh Assembly. The session, chaired by a panel of head of presidents Rehana Leghari, also addressed various written and additional questions of legislators.
While answering questions in the Sindh assembly, Najmi Alam recognized generalized encroachments on drains and water pipes. He indicated that three employees had been dismissed for issuing illegal leases. Answering the question of the member of the MQM, Quratul Ain, he said that the ministry had slum files recorded until 2011. Alam stressed the major problem of illegal construction in slums, mentioning that even the chic locality of Clifton has three slum colonies.
The government has formed a demolition team throughout the slums, the streets would be extended by 10 feet, any other structure in the streets would be shaved.
Responding to MQM Fauzia Hameed, he explained that the property is completely verified, the cards are prepared and that drone imagery is used before granting it.
