Indy 500: Robert Shwartzman remembers a “really frightening” Stard-Stall crash

Indianapolis 500 from Indycar Robert Shwartzman’s recruit ended unhappy on Sunday.

Shwartzman started the race on the post while finishing the fastest time around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in qualification, but all the jubilation turned into pain while a debacle on Pit Road has almost seriously injured a handful of its crew members.

He entered his stand stand after doing about 87 laps, and his car skidded as he entered the box. Four of its crew members tried to avoid the sliding car but failed. A crew member was taken to a stretcher.

“Honestly, I felt really strange brakes when I was slowly coming in the path of the stands. I locked the two front tires, which is generally not the case,” said Shwartzman. “I didn’t know if it was the brakes or because the tires were cold. I tried to be very slow. But as soon as I touched my brakes, my whole forehead was lost and I went directly to the guys.

“It was really scary because for the moment I braked, I was just a passenger.”

The Préma race pilot was the first recruit to take pole position since 1983.

“It’s really sad because we have done such a good job to qualify,” he said. “But it’s Indy 500. Anything can happen. Many strong drivers are out of the race or behind. It’s Indy 500. This happens.”

Alex Palou brought back the checkered flag. It was his first victory in Indy 500 and the fifth of the first six races of the 2025 season.
