WhatsApp has officially abandoned the management of another wave of iPhone and Android phones, starting June 1. So, if you still use an iPhone or Android phone before 2014, it is now time to consider upgrading – especially if WhatsApp is your essential email service.
Following the latest updates to its operating system requirements, WhatsApp now only supports iOS 15.1 and more iPhones, and Android devices operating on Android 5.0 and more. Originally, this update was pinned for May 5, 2025, but according to 9TO5MAC, an extension was granted by Apple to give users older iOS devices to prepare the change.
As of June 1, WhatsApp no longer supports the following iOS and Android models:
- iPhone 5S
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6S
- Galaxy S III
- Htc a x
- Sony Xperia Z
Some reports have also listed the iPhone 6S, the iPhone 6S Plus and the iPhone SE (1st generation), but 9TO5MAC says that these models work on iOS 15.8.4, they should be supported for a year or two until the next review of the Whatsapp operating system.
WhatsApp has published details on the update on its aid center indicating “Each year, we examine which devices and software are the oldest and have the least users. These devices may also not have the latest security updates, or could miss the features necessary to execute WhatsApp ”.

Although this update has no effect on users of the best iPhones and the best Android phones, a surprising number of people will always use older models, especially if they are not particularly warned in technology.
