- The British government is investing in cyber-defenses and capacities
- An investment of 1 billion pounds sterling includes a new cyber and electromagnetic order
- “Digital Targeting Web” seeks to strengthen cyber-defense and national security
The British government has announced its intention to invest more than 1 billion pounds sterling in a new pioneering “digital targeting web” to strengthen cyber-defense and national security.
At the same time, a new cyber and electromagnetic order will aim to “put the United Kingdom at the cutting edge of cyber operations”, with improved targeting capacities and digital defenses.
Investments will focus on the “commitments of the spearfielding field” by applying Ukraine’s learned lessons to the UK weapons systems, allowing faster and more precise battle decisions and better connected military weapons systems.
Digital capacities
Cybersecurity and defense are a key priority for this administration, Prime Minister Kier Starmer engaging in an increase in defense spending at 2.5% of GDP, “recognizing the critical importance of military preparation at an era of increased global uncertainty”.
In 2024, the United Kingdom announced the creation of a laboratory dedicated to security research and invited its allies to collaborate to combat the “new AI arms race” – investing millions in improving cybersecurity capacities.
The new command wants to give the British army above in the race for military advantage by degrading command and control, the scrambling of signals to missiles or drones and by intercepting enemy communications, for example.
The government warns that cyber attacks threaten the foundations of the economy and daily life, and with critical infrastructure supporting 13 cyber attacks per second, the dangers are certainly apparent.
“The hard -disputed lessons in the illegal war of Putin in Ukraine leave us without illusion that future conflicts will be won through forces which are better connected, better equipped and innovative more quickly than their opponents,” warns the defense secretary John Healey.
“We will give our armed forces the possibility of acting at speeds never seen before – connecting ships, planes, tanks and operators so that they can share vital information instantly and strike further and faster.”
