Chief meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari said on Wednesday that no technology exists to predict earthquakes, demystifying speculation on high intensity tremors in the coming days.

“Karachi has historically known 5.5 and 5.8 magnitude earthquakes,” said Laghari in a press release.

He detailed that light earthquakes were from due to the activation of the Landhi fault line, which goes through an adjustment process.

He said that millions of earthquakes of this nature occur daily around the world.

The head of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) also said that an ordinary person, even in developed countries like Japan, cannot make predictions on seismic activity.

The port city experienced three other earthquakes with intensities ranging from 2 to 3.1 magnitude last night, which made the fourth consecutive day of tremors.

According to the PMD seismic surveillance center, the last activity has taken the total number of tremors felt in Karachi at 26 since June 1, the seismological center said.

Since Sunday, several mild tremors have been felt in the districts of Karachi Landhi, Quidabad, Malir and Environmentnants, which raises concerns among residents. No significant damage or injury has been reported.
