Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney invited his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to the next seven -year -old group during a telephone call on Friday, while the two parties are looking to repair links after relations in the past two years.

The leaders agreed to stay in touch and look forward to meeting at the top of the G7 later this month, a reading of the Carney office said.

India is not a member of the G7 but can be invited as a guest to its annual rally, which will be held this year in Kananaskis in the Canadian province of Alberta, from June 15 to 17.

“Happy to receive a call from the Prime Minister (Carney) … thanked it for the invitation to the G7 top,” said Modi in an article on X.

Modi also declared in his position on Friday that India and Canada would work together “with renewed vigor, guided by mutual respect and shared interests”.

The bilateral links deteriorated after Canada accused India of worrying about the murder of a separatist chief Sikh and trying to intervene in two recent elections. Canada expelled several best Indian diplomats and consular officials in October 2024 after having linked them to murder and alleged a wider effort to target Indian dissidents in Canada.

New Delhi denied allegations and expelled the same number of Canadian diplomats in response.

India is the 10th trading partner in Canada and Canada is the largest exporter of pulses, including lenses in India.

Carney, who tries to diversify trade far from the United States, said it was logical for the G7 to invite India, because it had the fifth largest economy in the world and was at the heart of several supply chains.

“In addition, bilaterally, we have now agreed, above all, to the continuous dialogue of the police, there has therefore been progress on this subject, which recognize questions of responsibility. I have extended the invitation to Prime Minister Modi in this context,” he told journalists in Ottawa.

Four Indian nationals were charged in the murder of the separatist chief Sikh.
