Peugeot has chosen the 24-hour Petrolhead paradise from Le Mans to reveal its long-awaited GTI E-208 model, which, according to him, will offer “class” and interopera performances to the DNA of some of the most memorable GTI cars that preceded it.
Borrowing elements of the Motopropulseur group from the Abarth 600E model from Brand Fiat belonging to Stellantis, the next E-208 GTI will deliver 280 hp from its M4 + electric motor mounted on the front wheels, which is sufficient “ ti ” did the 0-62mph sprint in 5.7 seconds.
The top speed will be limited to 112 MPH, while the 54 kWh battery offers a slightly worrying range of 217 miles. This does not become again from EE-Tech Renault 5 technology recently released and far from something like the Cupra Born Vz, which manages 366 miles claimed from its 79 kWh battery.
The load is also relatively slow, with a 20 to 80% top by taking 30 minutes from a charge of 100 kW … the maximum rate it can manage from a DC fast charger.
That said, Peugeot says that it uses optimized thermal management and energy recovery that helps eliminate most of the battery life during driving as a hooligan.
The designers have clearly placed the original Peugeot 205 GTI at the front and the center during the style of the last electric offer, because it transports the recognizable shiny rethink work, red carpets and security belts inside, as well as redesigned front seats which include integrated pairings and, you guessed it, many red flashes.
Outside, the standard E-208 has been reinforced to include flared escape passages, shorter overhangs, a lower overall position and a wider track. Coupled with “hole” alloy wheels (another wink to the 205 GTI) and subtle spoilers, it certainly seems the game.
The French brand says that the E -208 GTI was entirely designed by the Peugeot sports team – the same which regularly does endurance races – which introduced a limited sliding differential and has refined braking and chassis to make a more engaging driving experience.
History weighs heavy on the hot hatch
There is currently no words on the price and E-208 GTI will be a vehicle only in Europe for the moment, although Abarth 600E scorpionism is a little lower of £ 40,000 (around $ 54,000 / $ 84,000 in), which gives a good indication.
However, the 205 GTI of the 1980s acquired a reputation because it was a featherweight (the 1.6 -liter version made the scale switch to only 848 kg), which gives it a power / weight ratio of 142 hp per ton, improving a large part of the Halbouetraire competition of time.
Peugeot’s electric version aims to repeat history, offering 5.7 kg per horse, which, according to the French brand, is the best power / weight ratio in its segment. Although these figures have the E -208 GTI to switch the scales to a bull of 1,596 kg – almost twice that of the 205 GTI of origin.
There is no distance from the weight with regard to electric vehicles, but it will be interesting to see so Peugeot can inject some of the original characteristics of the GTI 205 in this modern interpretation.
It is also good to see that the humble hot hatch is always on the agenda at the electricity age.
