Haripur:
The water levels in the Tarbela dam fell to dangerously low levels, posing a serious challenge to the production of electricity due to a lack of precipitation.
A continuous decline in the water entrance is recorded at the dam due to the current drought period. Currently, the water level in Tarbela is 1450.85 feet, which is only 48 feet above the dead level of 1402 feet.
According to a spokesperson, if the current situation persists, a new drop in the water level is feared. Although all electricity production units at the dam is operational, electricity production remains limited. The influx of water in the dam is 177,400 cuses, while the flow is at 151,800 Cuses. Although the 17 electricity production units are functional, they currently produce only 1,413 megawatts of electricity, well below their total production capacity of 4,888 megawatts. Water storage is extremely low.
The complete storage capacity of the Tarbela dam is 1,550 feet, but the current level is almost 100 feet below this brand.
Water experts and officials from the Ministry of Energy have warned that if weather conditions are not improving soon and precipitation does not start, water levels can drop even more. This could not only affect irrigation, but also lead to a significant reduction in electricity production.
