Lahore:
The Punjab government finalized the project for a new local government system, party sources confirmed on Wednesday, with the local law of 2025 proposed in the provincial assembly after the budgetary session.
According to party initiates, the new system will eliminate direct elections for the presidents of the Union Council and vice-presidents. Instead, elected advisers will select the best representatives.
In addition, the method of elections to the district advisor is also being revised. Under the new mechanism, advisers will challenge the elections to the entire Union council rather than individual services.
Party sources have also revealed that, unlike the previous model, financial and administrative powers will now be devoted to Tehsil’s advice instead of district councils.
As part of the next budgetary plan, the Punjab government has affected 5 billion rupees specifically for the conduct of local elections. In the first phase, the Assembly will approve the budget, followed by the adoption of the new law 2025 of local authorities.
Meanwhile, addressing journalists in Lahore, the local government of Punjab, Zeeshan Raique, said that the legislative process concerning the new law should be completed by July.
